Mycenae ...
... "Mycenae, rich in gold" This is how the ancient Greek bard, Homer, referred to this site in his epic works, the Odyssey and the Iliad. Mycenae was the center of the largest and most prosperous kingdom of the so-called "Mycenaean Age." According to legend, this was the era of heroes, such as Achilles, Agamemnon, and Odysseus, and culminated in the famous Trojan War. The remains of the citadel of Mycenae, supposedly once ruled by Agamemnon, are simply stupendous. The fortification walls are so massive that later Greeks believed them to be built by a race of giants. The modern visitor will be equally impressed when standing beneath the famous "Lion Gate," which dates from around 1250 BC, and its 20-ton stone lintel.
